BACKGROUND

Injury is the leading cause of death and disability for Australian children, greater than any illness or disease. Yet injury is rarely at the forefront of child health programs. Part of the reason injury has not been addressed is that it is a hidden, silent killer.

The global success in reducing deaths from infections and non-communicable diseases has in some cases made the injury problem more pronounced. The KIDS Foundation, backed by its solidly researched, evidence-based and perfected programs, is committed to bringing the KIDS Foundation and Australia’s childhood injury problem to the public’s attention.

In conjunction with Monash University, the KIDS Foundation has been engaged in a 10-year PhD research project titled “Developing Safety Risk Intelligence in Children”. The research undertaken for this project has shown that children between the ages of four and six have the ability to make conscious decisions about their own safety and how to manage risk if given the right experiences and knowledge. The KIDS Foundation believes in the “kids4KIDS” philosophy, where children are proactive in the safety education process, with the programs initiated and driven by the children.

Our work is internationally recognised, with articles featured in the Australasian Journal of Early Childhood in 2013 and more recently in 2016, as well as in the Asia-Pacific Journal of Research in Early Childhood Education in January 2015. Our programs have been independently researched with overwhelming results and we have won awards for our partnerships including the Prime Minister’s Award for Community and Corporate Partnerships.
